CASTING

A casting refers to a preliminary selection process or, more generally, a selection procedure in which models showcase their skills, appearance, and presence to a client or a team of decision-makers. During a casting, models have the opportunity to present themselves for specific jobs such as fashion shows, photo shoots, advertising campaigns, or other projects. At a casting, models are often asked to strike specific poses, wear different outfits, or demonstrate their walking skills. The client or casting team then evaluates whether the model fits what they are looking for in that particular project.

Often, specific types are requested for castings (for example, blonde, blue-eyed), and the agency selects those models from its roster who meet the criteria. During your daily phone call (check-in) with the agency, you’ll learn all the details about upcoming castings. For the casting itself, you should arrive on time, well-groomed, with your portfolio and your comp cards (wear form-fitting, simple clothing, as well as high heels for female models, and bring a bikini or swimsuit).

It is normal for a model to go through many castings, only a few of which lead to a confirmed booking. Of course, a model handles such rejections professionally and shows the same level of commitment at all future castings.

Your homework: At a casting, it’s not just about looking good—it’s about how quickly and precisely you can use your face and body. One of the most important tests is therefore: Can you demonstrate different angles within seconds?

Typically, you’ll receive short, clear instructions like “look straight,” “turn slightly,” “profile,” or “other side.” And this is precisely where beginners are separated from professionals. There’s no time to think or correct – you have to react instantly, execute precisely, and still appear natural.

A good model understands angles not as large movements, but as subtle, deliberate control. Small changes in head angle, gaze direction, or body tension determine whether your face appears flat or suddenly gains depth and expression.

So, at a casting, it’s not perfection that counts, but control and speed. Those who are confident in these aspects automatically appear more professional—and that’s exactly what sticks in the mind.
