PARASOCIAL INTERACTION
Parasocial interaction describes a one-sided emotional relationship between viewers and a well-known person from the media, such as influencers or models. Followers often feel like they know the person personally or are close to them, even though there is no real mutual contact. This effect is particularly enhanced by social media, as influencers and models regularly give insights into their daily lives, share personal thoughts or speak directly to their community. This creates the impression of friendship, trust or emotional connection in many people.
For influencers and models, parasocial interaction is an important part of their success, as it strengthens their bond with the community. Followers comment more often, follow content more regularly and trust recommendations more if they feel they have an authentic relationship with the person. Therefore, many influencers use personal stories, live streams, question and answer sessions, or intimate everyday insights to create closeness and authenticity.
This form of relationship also brings risks with it. Influencers and models are often under pressure to appear constantly available, open, and authentic. Additionally, the strong emotional bond between individual fans can become problematic, for example when boundaries between public person and private life become blurred or obsessive behavior develops.
