MODEL SCAM
A model scam is fraud that specifically targets aspiring models. Scammers exploit the wish to be discovered and promise fast careers, big jobs, or international contracts in order to get money, personal data, or pictures.
Typical tactics include:
- Upfront payments: You’re asked to pay in advance for “registration,” a mandatory shoot, a portfolio, or entry to a casting.
- Fake agencies and fake castings: Profiles or websites that imitate well-known agencies or brands, often via DM on social media.
- Overpayment trick: A supposed client sends you too much money and asks you to return the difference. The original payment later bounces.
- Revealing photos: You’re asked to send nude or underwear photos, supposedly for a casting.
- Travel offers: Jobs abroad with unclear terms where you’re expected to pay for travel or a visa yourself up front.
How to protect yourself: Check agencies and clients carefully (legal notice, real references, other models’ experiences), never sign anything under pressure, and don’t pay money for the promise of jobs. Reputable agencies earn their money through commissions on bookings. Don’t send revealing photos or ID details to strangers. See also: Red Flag.
