CANCEL CULTURE
Cancel culture refers to a social and cultural process in which individuals or groups are publicly criticized or boycotted because of statements, actions, or behaviors. This often happens via social media and can lead to the person affected losing their professional or social relationships or being ostracized by society. As a rule, it is a reaction to statements or deeds perceived as problematic or unethical.
- Public boycotts: An influencer or a famous personality is criticized for a controversial statement or action, and fans or consumers call on others to boycott this person or to stop supporting them.
- Social exclusion: Someone is excluded from online communities or removed from public events because he or she said or did something that is considered inappropriate.
Opinions on cancel culture are divided. Some see it as an important form of social activism for holding people accountable, while others fear that it leads to an exaggerated form of censorship and restriction of freedom of expression. In practice, cancel culture can result in people being condemned prematurely, without any guarantee that the context of their actions has been fully taken into account.
As an influencer, you live on public trust, so careless statements, old posts or questionable collaborations can quickly trigger a backlash and jeopardize ongoing brand deals. As a model, you're also visible through your social media presence, and many contracts contain clauses that allow termination for reputation-damaging behavior. Think before you post, respond calmly if something happens and get support from your agency or management.
