ALIAS
An alias name – also known as pseudonym – is a name you use professionally without using your real name. In the modeling business, an alias is often used to build a clear, recognizable brand, to be more internationally understandable, or to protect one’s own privacy. It is typically used in public, for example on sedcards, in portfolios, at castings or on social media.
However, your legal name remains the decisive one. Contracts, invoices, and tax matters are generally conducted under your official name. The alias primarily serves as a professional designation and a component of your external presentation. Under certain conditions, an artist’s name can also be officially recognized and, for example, entered in the identity card, provided that there is a corresponding, verifiable use in a professional context.
A consistently used alias name can be a strategic advantage in the modeling business, as it contributes to positioning, recognition, and professional perception. However, it also requires a clear separation between public identity and legal person.
From a legal standpoint, it is also relevant that an alias name can be protected by trademark law if it is used in business and achieves a certain level of recognition. In such cases, it may fall under the so-called name law (§ 12 BGB) or – in the case of stronger commercial use – also under trademark law. This means that you can take action against unauthorized use by third parties. Conversely, you should check before use whether the desired name is not already protected to avoid legal conflicts.
The alias name is not only a creative element of your self-marketing, but can also play a legally relevant role in your professional activities.
