BODY SHAMING
Body shaming in the social media context refers to the negative judgment, discrimination, or harassment of individuals based on their physical appearance, taking place on digital platforms. It is considered a form of cyberbullying and is especially common on social media, where influencers and models often present idealized images of “perfect” bodies.
People whose bodies do not match these ideals can become targets of body shaming. This can appear in the form of offensive comments, degrading posts, or other types of online harassment. One of the most common forms is fat shaming, which targets individuals with larger body types.
Although body shaming is often directed at others, it can also manifest as self-criticism. Individuals may negatively judge their own bodies or constantly compare themselves to others online. In the context of influencer marketing, body shaming can also stem from envy, where influencers receive negative comments about their appearance – especially in connection with sponsored content or campaigns.
Raising awareness around this issue is essential in order to promote a more positive online culture that encourages respect, inclusivity, and acceptance of diverse body types.
