WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT A CASTING?!
Going to a casting can be both exciting and challenging. Here’s a quick overview of what to expect:
Arrival and check-in:
When you arrive, you’ll probably need to check in with the casting agent or their assistant; at larger, open castings, who to report to and where is usually clearly signposted. If you’ve received a personal invitation to a casting, you’ll find the name of your contact person in the invitation. Be there on time and bring your portfolio, printed and, if possible, in digital form on an iPad as well. You should also bring your comp card and your casting outfit. Ideally, put the outfit on before you enter the casting location so you don’t have to change on site.
Waiting time:
Be prepared for some waiting. At castings, you often have to wait until it’s your turn. Bring a book or something else that makes you feel good to pass the time. Use this time to relax and mentally prepare for your casting.
First meeting:
Once you’re called, it’s your turn to present yourself and your skills. This is your chance to make an unforgettable first impression, so be polite and confident, and follow the instructions.
Photos and measurements:
You may be asked to have photos taken on site, and you’ll be measured. So make sure you’re dressed appropriately—usually in fitted clothing that shows off your figure—so that you can be measured more easily and your proportions come across perfectly in the photos.
The audition:
This is the decisive part of the casting. You’ll probably be asked to walk, pose, or present a specific task related to the casting, such as reading a script or performing a particular walking style. Pay close attention to the instructions and show your skills with confidence.
Feedback and instructions:
After the audition, you may receive feedback or further instructions right away. Listen carefully and don’t hesitate to ask relevant questions if they haven’t already been answered.
What to bring:
- Your current portfolio, printed and in digital form
- Your comp card
- A book to pass the waiting time (optional)
- Casting outfit
- Water bottle
- Light snack
- A change of shoes (if required, high heels with different heel heights)
- Makeup and a hairbrush for touch-ups
Conclusion:
A casting is your opportunity to present yourself in person and convince clients of your professionalism. Careful preparation, punctuality, and a confident presence are key. The final selection depends on the client’s specific requirements, such as the concept, target audience, and desired look. Every casting gives you valuable experience and expands your network in the industry.
