CAN I FIND JOBS ON MY OWN AS A MODEL?!
At most professional modeling agencies, the rule is that all jobs must be handled through the agency, even if you secured the client yourself. There are several reasons for this. The agency handles contract negotiations, fee agreements, invoicing, and legal protection. At the same time, it protects you from rock-bottom rates or unfair terms.
As a rule, the agency also receives a commission on jobs you’ve secured yourself, since it officially represents you and provides administrative support. The amount of this commission is specified in the contract.
It is therefore important that you never sign contracts on your own or bill clients directly without going through the agency if you are exclusively represented. This can lead to breaches of contract, in the worst case to termination without notice, and depending on the contract, even to a contractual penalty.
Another point that is often underestimated: It is quite possible that your agency was already in contact with the supposedly newly acquired client. It’s not uncommon for a client to find the fee too high and then try to go directly through the model—hoping that the model has less negotiation experience or doesn’t know their market value. This happens more often than you might think.
With a friendly but clear reference to your own agency, you can handle such a request confidently and effectively. Such a response comes across as professional and signals to the client that you work in a structured manner and do not accept every collaboration before the terms have been reviewed. This is exactly what strengthens your position in the market.
Working professionally means showing initiative. Secretly bypassing your own agency means losing trust—and trust is your greatest asset in this industry.
