Haute Couture Walk

The Haute Couture walk is all about performance, precision, and strong expression. Extravagant gowns are brought to life through intentional body control, exaggerated posing, and dramatic elements. Models present the looks with a focused, confident gaze- while facial expressions remain minimal, a sense of acting and emotional control is essential.

Personal presence is key to making these exceptional designs stand out and truly captivate. This walk is considered the most striking and theatrical. International top model Coco Rocha famously describes it as “over the top” – it’s not just about beauty, but about conveying energy, endurance, and strength. For beginners, this means building confidence and embracing the freedom to be bold and expressive.

Haute Couture, a French term meaning “high dressmaking,” refers to exclusive, custom-made garments crafted with exceptional attention to detail. These pieces are less about everyday wear and more about wearable art presented on the runway. Accordingly, the walk itself must be highly stylized – featuring strong posture, often intentionally angular movements, and a high level of body tension, combined with precise steps and expressive gestures.

Prêt-à-Porter Walk (Casual Walk)

In contrast, the Prêt-à-Porter or casual walk is more relaxed and natural. Movements are softer, a subtle sway of the hips is allowed, and both posture and facial expression can feel more effortless. A slight smile is often appropriate, and making eye contact with the audience at the end of the runway is common.

Prêt-à-Porter, or Ready-to-Wear, refers to clothing designed for everyday use rather than custom tailoring. While more accessible than Haute Couture, these collections play a crucial role in the fashion industry – setting trends, defining seasonal key pieces, and shaping contemporary style.

Avantgarde Walk

The avantgarde walk follows an entirely different philosophy. Avantgarde fashion deliberately breaks with convention and exists outside the mainstream. Designs are visionary, experimental, and often carry artistic, social, or political messages.

On the runway, the model takes a more understated approach, allowing the designs to remain the focal point. The walk is controlled, subtle, and intentional – every movement serves the garment without overpowering it.

Avantgarde designers frequently experiment with unconventional materials, innovative textures, and bold shapes to create unique silhouettes and proportions. One of the pioneers of this movement was Pierre Cardin, whose futuristic designs redefined runway aesthetics. Many of these experimental ideas later influence mainstream fashion in more wearable forms.
